Experiment 1: Lanes

Posted on 13:41 by michael

Our first urban experiment!
We wanted to see if people would follow footway lanes like vehicles follow lanes on the carriageway. We created pedestrian lanes in Oxford Street, outside the tube exit and close to a crossing.
Most people did not follow the directions, but some followed the centre line when walking.
We will try again with more visible tape and a less complex street environment!

  1. So next time:

    - Thicker lines
    - Longer lines
    - Further from tube station / anything else that’s likely to mean
everyone is walking in one direction
    - More visual contrast (Red centre line and yellow arrows)
    - More flow arrows
    - Signage?
    - Hi-visibility jackets?

    Anything else?
